Dictionary Term

In information technology, a repository is a digital data storehouse where information is saved in the form of metadata. A repository can hold metadata from across multiple databases with a variety of database management systems, operating systems, and hardware configurations, and is globally accessible to users in a network. Other than backup and storage, enterprises and organizations maintain repositories to prevent the duplication and unnecessary spread of data and to simplify the querying process.
