Dictionary Term

FTP (also called file transfer protocol and file transfer program) is technology that makes it possible to transfer data files via the Internet, between remotely located computers. FTP is probably the most used tech on the Internet today, and remains the simplest, quickest way to transfer data remotely.

FTP sends files by splitting them into several discreet parts, assigning a number to each, and sending them in an ordered series to a target computer. Once the segments are received by the target computer, they are reassembled into their original order.
