TIBCO Spotfire is a business intelligence platform that captures, analyzes and visualizes big data with heavy use of predictive analytics. The platform is owned and distributed by TIBCO Software, Inc.
In providing business intelligence, TIBCO Spotfire software performs four key functions. First, it searches and sorts data based on user input, with an interface designed for the common business user. Second, it visualizes data with dashboards and analytic applications selected and modified by the user. Third, TIBCO Spotfire software performs predictive analytics using predictive statistics. Fourth, the platform comes with social applications that allow for online information sharing and collaboration.
Spotfire is a product within the TIBCO Software, Inc. branded house. TIBCO Software, Inc. is a computer technology company that creates and distributes enterprise-class infrastructure software both within the walls of a client’s business and in the cloud. TIBCO Software, Inc. began as a seed capital offering of $250,000 by Teknekron Corporation to a businessman and engineer named Vivek Ranadivé. With this money, Ranadivé founded Teknekron Software Systems in 1986, and provided a product called The Information Bus (TIB) that moved data between software programs. In 1993, Ranadivé sold Teknekron Software Systems to Reuters Holdings PLC for $125.1 million cash, and in 1997 founded The Information Bus Company (TIBCO), named, of course, for the software that he had built while at Teknekron.
Then, in 2007, TIBCO Software, Inc. purchased its way into the business intelligence space with the acquisition of Spotfire Inc., a BI company out of Somerville, MA. Spotfire was started by Christopher Ahlberg after his time at the University of Maryland’s Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory in the early 1990s. The company was founded first in 1996 as Information Visualization and Exploration Environment Development (IVEE Development) and the name was soon changed to Spotfire Inc. TIBCO Software, Inc. purchased Spotfire for $195 million cash. Since 2007, TIBCO Software, Inc. has developed their Spotfire solution a number of times, with iterations like Spotfire 5.0 and 5.5 that make new in-database sources available with new visualization options and data governance upgrades.
Vivek Ranadivé remains the CEO of TIBCO Software, Inc. The company has its headquarters in Palo Alto, CA, and in 2012 reported a revenue of approximately $1 billion.
