Cognos 8.2 Integrates BI and Performance Management

by Mark Smith

White Paper : Going Beyond Spreadsheets
Spreadsheets have been around since the late 1970s. They were an instant sensation. At its annual user conference, Cognos introduced version 8.2 of its business intelligence (BI) platform, as well as applications for performance management in finance, HR and operations. This announcement is a milestone for Cognos, as it reaches the goal the company set forth three years ago to deliver an integrated set of BI applications on one platform. This also is an important step for organizations seeking an enterprise approach to BI. Also with version 8.2, Cognos is offering Cognos Go, which provides search and mobile access through the Blackberry PDA. Cognos’ BI and performance management applications now compare favorably with those of their competitors; in fact, Cognos now finds itself with a technology advantage over those competitors, who are busy integrating acquired technologies and trying to find synergies for their customer offerings. Organizations looking for an integrated set of BI applications they can use across the organization should evaluate Cognos’ offerings as an integrated application suite and platform, just as they would consider Oracle and SAP for integrated suites of enterprise resource planning (ERP) or customer relationship management (CRM).
