Dictionary Term

Tiered Storage

AKA:

Tiered storage is a system of data containment in which electronic storage devices are assigned tiers based upon the cost and sophistication of the physical unit, and in which data is assigned to a particular tier (storage unit) based upon characteristics such as prevalence, security considerations and memory and processing requirements.

Tiered storage varies depending upon the needs of the organization or user/s: from relatively simple, two-tiered systems, to five and six tiered systems. Data can be moved between tiers manually, or can be programmed to migrate automatically.
