Dictionary Term

SQL, often used synonymously with the phrase “structured query language” and pronounced “sequel” or “s-q-l,” is the most fundamental language of relational databases. SQL is built to query, manipulate, define and control data with commands such as “query,” “insert,” “delete” and “update.”

Most databases still support some form of SQL, which can be convenient when conducting work across multiple platforms.
