Software Agent

AKA:

A software agent is a computer program, or a portion of a complex computer program, that independently performs tasks on behalf of the user or another program, continuously.

Software agents exist everywhere in computing. Some of the most prolific software agents are part of data mining and query programs, like Google’s famous “Googlebots” that aggregate data from all over the web in order to devise rankings.
