Dictionary Term

Fourth Generation Language

AKA:

Fourth Generation Language (Fourth Generation Programming Language, 4GL) is a high-level programming language and software development environment that is closer to human language than first and second generation languages, which are machine dependent, and third generation language, which is an earlier high-level programming language.

Because it is closer to human language, 4GL is more accessible to users. 4GL is commonly found in database management systems and operating systems, and is most often used to access databases.
