Columbus Zoo Uses BI Platform To Tame Fast-Growing Operations

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is much more than a zoo. In addition to the more than 700 species of animals, the Powell, Ohio, nonprofit in recent years has added a water park and a 12-acre amusement park, and renovated its 18-hole golf course.

With all that growth came more visitors, more revenue – 1.9 million visitors and nearly $65 million in 2012, the most recent year for which numbers are available – and a need to track these new business areas. The zoo began using a BI platform from Information Builders about 18 months ago and found that, along with the benefits came some challenges involving the adoption of new big data technology and adjusting to the business process changes it ushered in.
