How To Get Into An Analytics Career Without Spending A Fortune
Many people are considering careers in analytics, and attracted to graduate degree programs as the key to success.
When I wrote “4 Reasons Not To Get That Masters In Data Science,” I knew there was some interest in the topic because I had received quite a few letters asking what I thought of these programs. What I didn’t know was just how much interest there would be.
Over 30,000 people have read that article since it was posted 5 months ago, making it by far the most popular thing I’ve written. The discussion was mighty lively, with quite a few comments including several people telling me off. And even though the post was clearly intended to make the case against investing in costly graduate study in analytics, the letters haven’t stopped coming.
I’m all for learning, and for formal education, too. Still, I have doubts about the return on investment for many people considering these programs.
So, let’s look at this another way.
Can you begin a career in analytics without spending a fortune? Yes, you can.
I recently did some careful study of my own contacts in the analytics industry, as was surprised to find that many of them have not finished a college degree of any type, let alone a graduate degree. But I can’t recommend that approach. Even if it’s worked for some in the past, I doubt many people could manage the same today.
